The Hunter-Central Coasts Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) was formally declared by the Minister for Energy and published in the NSW Gazette on 9 December 2022. This is a big step forward by the NSW Government in the transition from coal fire power generators in the Hunter and Central Coast regions.
The implementation of the Hunter-Central Coast REZ has been led by EnergyCo NSW and has received significant commercial interest attracting almost 40gigawatts and more than $100 billion of potential investment. As part of the ROI process there has been interest shown in the following projects,
24 solar energy projects
13 onshore and 7 offshore wind energy projects
35 large-scale batteries
8 pumped hydro projects
This level of interest from investors is a vote of confidence in the NSW Government and the Hunter and Central Coast regions. Energy Minister Matt Kean stated, “These results show that energy investors see the Hunter and Central Coast as some of the best investment destinations anywhere in the country, which will translate into jobs and prosperity for the region”.
Exciting times ahead for the Hunter and Central Coast regions.
